Turning the Page
Find the fun with Fall events in the AVL
There is something about Labor Day that feeds my never-ending desire to turn the page. I still recall the excitement of the school supplies trip to Sunset Drugstore, where each Trapper Keeper unlocked the wisp of possibility as to what I might become that year. In 1979, after nine years at St. Stephens Day School, I was beyond giddy with the promise of ascending to the top of the heap — a sixth grader with the added bonus of being a member of the patrols. I had imagined the day when they put the bright orange belt over my head and clipped me into responsibility, opening and closing the doors of the family cars, not forgetting to say “Good Morning,” in my chipperest of tones. And then my dream was squashed when we were told that Hurricane David was barreling its way through the Caribbean and we would have to board up and stay home because school was canceled. I was devastated while the rest of the students were cheering for the extra summertime. My sister made a fort in our shared bedroom and brought in all the snacks, sneaking in a battery-operated radio to lipsync to Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls”. She rolled her eyes when I complained about my shattered plans, calling me a super nerd and whining about why can’t I just shut up and try and have fun for once?
So it’s in that spirit of looking for fun that we bring you a few events you might want to check out as well as a teaser that we are planning our first in-person event. Details will be forthcoming, but we’d also love to hear what you might enjoy as well. So leave a message in the chat and in the meantime, we hope to see you around town this month.

We are most excited about Katharine, The Wright Sister. "It all started with two boys and a bicycle shop. Wilbur and Orville Wright, both unsuited to college and disinclined to leave home, jumped on the popular new fad of bicycle riding and opened a shop in Dayton, Ohio. Repairing and selling soon led to tinkering and building as the brothers offered improved models to their eager customers. Amid their success, a new dream began to take shape. Engineers across the world were puzzling over how to build a powered flying machine—and Wilbur and Orville wanted in on the challenge. But their younger sister, Katharine, knew they couldn't do it without her. The three siblings would solve the problem of human flight. From internationally bestselling author Tracey Enerson Wood, Katharine, the Wright Sister is an unforgettable novel that shines a spotlight on one of the most important and overlooked women in history, and the sacrifices she made so that others might fly."
